Well the Dallas Mavericks start their season tonight, and as excited as I am to have both football and basketball going at the same time I don't want to get myself to excited about the Mavs. I will still watch and enjoy most of the games this year, but I will continually try to remind myself that it doesn't matter how good the Mavs look over 82 games, it only matters how they play in the playoffs. So I will wear my Golden State Warriors "We Believe" t-shirt proudly to remind myself that 67 wins in the regular season doesn't guarantee a NBA championship, or even four playoff wins. So, Go Mavs, just don't disappoint me again.

Well it finally happened. Rex Grossman got benched, and Brian Griese will start this week for the Bears. The Bears finally did what any football fan who saw Rex play at the end of last year and the beginning of this year thought was the obvious decision, bench the terrible QB. Rex had already proven that he can't win a championship, well at least for his team. He was arguably the MVP of the Super Bowl for the Colts. Griese isn't the Bears future but maybe he can save the Bears season from hitting rock bottom.

Leinart got benched last week, and Kurt Warner came in and looked good. So now Kurt might get more playing time on drives where the coaching staff decides to go no huddle. Reggie Bush has found out that running in the NFL is much harder than against teams like Fresno State, and he will now have to prove he can be THE guy with Deuce out, something Reggie has never done. Can he handle it? We will see. Can Leinart bounce back? We will see. But there is one thing that isn't being questioned, and that is the fact that Vince Young is the undeniable leader and heart of his Titans. Vince wins games.After his first 16 games Vince is 10-6, and he has his team at 2-1 after pounding Reggie's Saints, and barely letting one get away from him against the Colts. I guess there was a reason VY got drafted 3 and Leinart 10. But football careers aren'y made in one year, but I just see VY being good for a long time.

The Cowboys are 3-0 and their offense looks good and the defense is improving each week. The next two weeks the Cowboys play two 0-3 teams, so if they can take care of business they should be 5-0 heading into the game in Dallas against the consensus #1 team in the NFL, the Patriots. What a game that will be. So I just hope the Boys take care of the Rams this week first, playing against winless teams is tough they play that much harder trying to get to there first victory. Lucky for the Cowboys though workhorse tailback Steven Jackson will not play. So I see the Cowboys getting to 4-0.

Another Week

Week 2 for the Cowboys and week three for the Longhorns is this weekend. The Cowboys play Miami Sunday afternoon (ESPN Game Preview). After seeing there offense in week one I don't see them having any trouble scoring on the Dolphins, but what I am looking forward to watching is how the Cowboys defense responds. Luckily for the Cowboys the next two teams they play have terrible offenses, Miami and Chicago. Miami doesn't have anywhere near the explosive offense that the Giants have so I see the defense playing much better this week. If the Cowboys can't hold the Miami offense to under 35 points then I don't see this Cowboy team going anywhere. So hopefully the defense can get some confidence playing against the lousy Dolphins and Bears offenses that will carry over into week 4 against the explosive Rams. Maybe even by then Terrence Newman will be healthy, hopefully.

The Longhorns have a schedule filler game this week playing against Central Florida(ESPN Game Preview). In week 2, well in the second half anyways, the Horns shook off the rust that was apparent in week one. They scored 27 unanswered points against the top 25 TCU Hornedfrogs to win 34-13. I think having such a good game for them after squeaking one out against Arkansas State was the only thing that could keep them fans from proclaiming the season lost. Unfortunately for the Longhorns the #3 ranked OU Sooners have looked really good. So Texas needs to take the next 3 games against Central Florida, Rice, and Kansas State to improve every part of their team so that they can be ready to play the Red River Shootout in Dallas. If the Horns can beat OU I don't see them losing to any other Big 12 team. So Texas Big 12/National Championship hopes depends, as it usually does, on the game versus hated Oklahoma.

The other college football game I will be paying close attention to will be #1 USC vs. #14 Nebraska (ESPN Game Preview). I am really hoping for the upset. Not only would an upset benefit the Big 12, but I just don't think USC is the number one team in the country and I would love to see them get knocked off especially by a team that Texas has to play later in the year. If Nebraska does win, the game they play in Austin will just mean that much more for the Horns.

It is here. The NFL season started last night with the Colts embarrassing the Saints. The Cowboys play Sunday night, and I can not wait. Although, the season doesn't seem as promising as it did at the start of training camp. What has changed since then? Well, we don't know when Terrence Newman will be healthy, and without him our defense loses its #1 cover guy. And Terry Glenn could be out for the season, which means more double coverage for Terrell Owens. Missing Terry Glenn also takes one more weapon away from QB Tony Romo, but I still believe he is going to have a solid year, not great but solid. Even with these 2 losses I am still optimistic just like any fan of any team is today, except for Saints fans of course. The Cowboys open with division rival the New York Giants (ESPN Game Preview). I don't see the Cowboys losing this game, so I am saying that after week 1 the Cowboys are 1-0. I will go ahead and get my prediction for the season out there for the record. I believe the Cowboys make the playoffs with 9 to 11 wins, and I see them winning at least one playoff game, hopefully more.

I will be writing more on the NFL throughout the year, and not just about the Cowboys. I will also be writing about college football with a focus on the Longhorns, but I refuse to say anything about the Horns until after the game vs TCU (ESPN Game Preview).

NFL Draft

The NFL draft is approaching quickly. Last year I did an entire mock round 1, but that didn't work out well so I don't think I am going do one this year. Instead I am just going to list some players I think the Cowboys should take.
In the first round I would like to see the Cowboys take a WR, either Dwayne Bowe (my prefered pick) from LSU or Dwayne Jarrett from USC. In the second and third rounds I would like the Cowboys to take a DB and a QB. I don't know enough about the DB position in the draft to have a preferred DB pick, but the QB I would like the Cowboys to grab would be Kevin Kolb from Houston. If Justin Blalock from Texas is available in the 4th round that would be a great chance for the Cowboys to get a good OL. The only other person that I would like to see the Cowboys draft would be RB Michael Bush from Louisville, since he was hurt most of the season he will be available on the second day. Before he got hurt he was amazing and I believe he is still work taking a chance on.

There is a rumor going around about the Mavericks filling their final roster spot with Reggie Miller. I don't think Mavs necessarily need him, but since we have an open roster spot I say he would be one of the best, if not the best option, for filling it. The Mavs are already the deepest team in the NBA and adding Reggie would just separate us that much more. I think I could get used to the idea of the NBAs all-time best 3-point shooter coming off the bench to knock done some shots. And why wouldn't Reggie want to play? He never won a championship, and this is his chance to join the best team in the NBA, come off the bench for limited minutes, and have one more chance of getting that ring he always wanted. So hopefully this will pan out, and if anyone could pay Reggie enough to come back it would definitely be Mark Cuban.

Bye Bye Big Bill

Bill Parcells retired today, again. He was 34-32 with two playoff appearances (key word being appearances because neither "appearance" involved a win, which makes it his only stop in his coaching career without a playoff win) over his four year reign over the Cowboys. I must say I never really liked Big Bill. I always hated the way he called the game, it still felt like Dave Campo was calling the offensive plays. What did Big Bill really do in Big D, well he underachieved and he changed our defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4, other than that Bill Parcells didn't exactly do much in his time in Dallas. There is nothing more frustrating then having two great WRs, a great TE, a solid 3rd WR and QB that can throw the ball and then lining up in a double tight set and running the ball up the middle two of the three plays in a three and out series. I am glad Bill is gone. Some of the main talk about a replacement has been about the Bears defensive coordinator, but that is not at all what I want. I want someone who will come in and call an offensive game plan that will score points, not a defensive coach. Personally I would love for the Cowboys to get someone like Mike Leech from Texas Tech, he would be my number one choice. Stoops has also been thrown around by the Dallas media and I guess I would be ok with that. Hey what the heck, what about Pete Carroll he has NFL experience and he seems to be doing pretty good year in and year out, and I bet he would love another chance to succeed in the NFL. I just hope Jerry Jones hires someone soon. I don't want my team without a coach for very long.

It is finally here, well in two weeks it will finally be here. The Super Bowl has the makings to actually be a good game, something completely unlike the travesty that was played last year, well at least I hope so. Peyton Manning finally beat the Patriots in the playoffs and finally made it to a super bowl. Rex Grossman didn't hurt the team to the point of a loss, in fact he played rather well. So its Bears vs Colts, Chicago vs Indianapolis, and I am looking forward to it. It will be a fantastic Indy Offense vs a swarming Chicago Defense, and a much improved Colt defense vs a playoff improved Bear offense. Can Peyton Manning cement himself as one of the greatest qb's of all time, or will the Bears Defense become known as one of the best of all time. Can Rex Grossman continue to play well, or will he turn the ball over again and again. Will Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson run all day long, or will the Colts defense continue to step up against the run? I can only wait and see, because I have no good feeling about who will win this game. Although I will be rooting for the Bears, I have never really liked the Colts and I really don't like the AFC and the Bears have Cedric Benson and Nathan Vasher and they happen to be Longhorns, so I figure thats a good enough reason for me to root for the Bears.
